Cana Communities is a charity who works with the homeless and people in crisis. We are not funded by the government nor do we receive grants. We are supported by personal donations and appeals. Cana is considered to be one of the larger carers for homelessness. We do not have paid staff and each arm of Cana is operated by a team of volunteers.
We have recently started leasing a farm in Kingswood Rd. Orchard Hills. It is a very exciting initiative and one we hope will benefit many. Our plan is to include marginalised groups, mens/womens groups, schools, and anyone who would enjoy working and or playing in a farm space.
As you can imagine it is an extremely expensive exercise and one we have taken on in sections, there is much to do and each part will be developed slowly and as a community effort. One of the great things about working together with people who are different from ourselves is we learn about their experiences which in turn helps us to understand and become better people.
We have been working with tafe, centrelink and the migrant groups and have recently been training 15 refugees in Australian farming. They have been learning English in the veggie patch and have enjoyed the 20 week course so much they have enrolled in the next one and bringing friends. We are also working with PRA who have joined in our paving and bricklaying course and we will be starting a painting and decorating one in July. We have marmalade that needs to be made and coriander that needs to turn into pesto!!!!
Younger students will be presented with opportunities to assist the Cana Community in a meaningful way. More senior students will be able to work with Cana people to achieve positive practical and social outcomes.
